How I
work with
my clients
1. GET IN TOUCH
Starting therapy can be a daunting process, but the first step is just an email.
Get in touch to discuss your situation and arrange a time to call.
We will have a brief conversation lasting up to 15 minutes to explain your needs and if appropriate, set up a time to meet for a consultation.
This call is completely free and there is no obligation to attend a consultation.
2. INITIAL CONSULTATION
The next step is meeting for an initial consultation.
An in-depth consultation is the best way to find out if therapy is right for you. It takes place in person or online and usually lasts for around 90 minutes.
This consultation is similar to a therapy session and provides an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have to decide whether the therapy is right for you.
During this confidential conversation you will be asked your reasons for seeking therapy and what kind of help you’re looking for.
This is a chance to provide background information on your family history, childhood experiences, relationships and medical or psychological history.
This consultation is also a chance to ask any questions about my services and to decide what type of therapy, fixed term or open-ended might be best suited to your needs.
This session will allow you to get a sense of my way of working and decide whether I am the right therapist for you.
If we agree to work together we will set a fixed time to meet on a weekly basis either in-person or online.
If I'm unable to give you the right help myself, I will provide you with suggestions for alternative treatments and therapists.
About
Therapy
WHAT KIND OF
THERAPY IS THIS?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a talking therapy effective for creating deep-seated and long term change.
It has three main principles:

1. That our past experiences affect the present.
The ideas we have about ourselves, our patterns of behaviour and the issues we face can be traced back to our childhoods and earliest relationships.

In our current lives we are often unconsciously recreating similar situations and dynamics in an attempt to resolve long standing unresolved issues.
By addressing the root of the problems we face, we have a better chance of making deep seated changes to our lives.
2. That we're not always aware of how we act or why we do the things we do

Many of us have developed defences, blind spots and coping mechanisms to help us through points in our lives.
Whilst these may have been necessary then, often we find that these ways of being have become over-corrections, and now no longer serve us.

Unlike other therapies, a psychodynamic psychotherapist is uniquely trained to work with the unconscious to observe and sensitively bring these into awareness.

Developing your self awareness gives you the opportunity to make changes to the parts of yourself you’d like to.

3. That the relationship between the therapist and client is an important part of the therapy.
Most people find they have friends, partners or families to advise or reassure them with their issues- and yet often this doesn’t seem to help.
The therapeutic relationship is uniquely different. It is a confidential, non judgemental and unbiased environment dedicated to you.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy believes that the same long standing patterns and ways of relating in your life will often be re-enacted in therapy; this gives you an opportunity to trial out new ways of relating to others and yourself in a safe space.
Studies have shown that psychotherapy can contribute significantly to mental and physical health, a sense of well-being and an ability to manage life more effectively.

FAQ'S
1. WHAT KIND OF THERAPY IS THIS?
Read about psychodynamic psychotherapy here
2. IS THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?
You can see a list of some of the issues I treat here.
The best way to find out if therapy is right for you is to come for an initial consultation, that way you can get a feel for the way I work and whether I'm the right therapist for you.
3. DOES IT WORK?
There is a large body of evidence to show that psychotherapy works; demonstrating positive, enduring outcomes from both short-term and long-term intervention.

Click here to see an overview of supporting evidence provided by the UKCP.
4. HOW LONG DOES THERAPY LAST?
I offer both fixed term (approx. 12 weeks) of therapy, as well as open ended therapy.

The length of therapy needed may depend on how long you have been having difficulties or the degree of change you wish to undertake. The option best suited to you will be discussed in the initial consultation.
As a general rule fixed term work is best suited to single-focus issues and life events, or where longer term work is not practically possible.
Open ended work is best suited to deeper rooted or multiple issues.
It can take time to unpick and make sense of patterns and beliefs you’ve held for many years. Open ended therapy allows time to build the trust needed to create deep-seated, long term change.
5.IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?
Therapy is a safe, non-judgemental and strictly confidential space.
Patient information will not be shared without consent unless required by a court of law or where there exists a serious risk of harm to self or others.
6. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
See a guide to pricing here
7. HOW DO I PAY?
Payments are on a monthly basis via bank transfer, standing order or cash. I am registered with AXA, Aviva and Vitality health insurers.

I offer an honorary clinic providing a limited number of low-cost daytime sessions available to patients in need. Please enquire for availability.
8. WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS AN APPOINTMENT?
Therapy requires a commitment to regular sessions in order to be effective. If we agree to work together we will set a fixed time to meet on a weekly basis either in-person or online.
All missed sessions will be chargeable notwithstanding emergencies. Sessions maybe rescheduled on occasion with discretion.
